…a love letter to the city that raised me
My hometown, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, long the subject of good-natured ribbing for its supposed 20-year lag behind national trends, has in recent years become a city in the midst of a spirited renaissance. For as long as I can remember, locals and outsiders alike have debated whether Cincinnati truly is a step behind, or whether the Queen City has quietly been crafting its own compelling narrative (as Midwesterner’s do) – one of resilience, innovation, vibrant culture, and an increasingly dynamic food scene. The city’s evolution is evident in its revitalized neighborhoods, its embrace of new technology, its growing sports pride, and its willingness to champion both traditional and fresh ideas. So, is Cincinnati still culturally behind, or has it become a center of innovation and creativity on par with the nation’s leading cities?
Even though I haven’t lived in Cincinnati in more than 25 years, what happens there matters to me. My family has a 7 generation history with the city. So, let’s take a look.

From the James Beard-nominated chefs at Mita’s and Salazar, to inventive newcomers like Please and Sotto, Cincinnati dining now rivals any major city. Food trucks, pop-up kitchens, and international markets fuel an adventurous spirit, inviting residents and visitors alike to taste the city’s evolution firsthand.
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
Of course, no city’s transformation is complete. Cincinnati still wrestles with challenges: persistent racial and economic inequality, the need for affordable housing, and the ongoing struggle to retain young talent in a competitive national landscape. Yet, the city’s willingness to confront these issues head-on—with public dialogue, grassroots activism, and creative problem-solving—speaks to a community determined not to fall behind.

So, is Cincinnati still culturally behind the rest of the country by 20 years? The answer today is more nuanced than ever.
