I’ve been in nesting mode. I get this way every year as Indian summer ebbs into fall. My thoughts meander.
Maybe my real happy ending is falling in love with the simplest parts of life – savoring that first sip of morning decaf, losing myself in the stillness of an October sunrise, or smelling freshly baked bread (before I remember carbs are a no-go for me). It’s driving down a familiar road with the windows down, with the warm air blowing my re-growing hair while my favorite songs consume me. It’s lingering on a quiet afternoon going down the rabbit hole between the pages from my stacks of books, allowing the words to envelop me like a favorite sweater. These moments of ordinary days are magic. I find beauty and creativity in ordinary things.
Maybe this finding of pieces of joy in ordinary things so often taken for granted is the happy ending. It’s what I saw in my husband the first time I laid eyes on him. The best way to describe it is that he smiles with his whole self. It’s in the laughter that comes out of nowhere with a random stranger.
